Acne which is also known as acne vulgaris is an inflammatory condition that arises in the pilosebaceous follicle. A hair follicle is composed of pores or an opening on the skin’s surface and underneath the skin, the hair bulb with a sebaceous gland (oil gland) connected to it.
The oil gland empties into this pore, and even though it is a hair follicle. Hair may not grow out of it as the hair might be very fine.
Hormones control the activity of the sebaceous glands, causing them to enlarge, and become more active, produce more sebum or oil. This sebum will then mixes with the dead skin cells inside a widened hair follicle to clog our pores.
Androgen hormones increase in both the boys and the girls during puberty, and these hormones can contribute to acne flares by stimulating the sebaceous oil glands attached to the pores. The hormones provoke the release of the sebum (oily matter) into your pores and onto your skin. Androgen hormones increase when you hit puberty or when you are stressed, making your oil glands go crazy.
We all have bacteria living on our skin called propionibacterium acnes. It is completely harmless until it is fed with oil. When the acne bacteria on your face have access to a plentiful oil supply, which your sebaceous gland pumps out, it can inflame and infect the follicle. As the bacterial infection deepens and pressure grows behind the clogged pore, your immune system reacts, and a pus-filled bump forms on the top of your skin – a pimple. Acne is really the result of your skin trying to fight off the infection, and the result is the undesirable big red zit.
There are three main types of acne. You can have one or all three kinds of acne. They are listed in order of severity below:
Comedones are created when pores are plugged with excess sebum oil, which combines with keratin (dark skin cells) and dirt or debris from our environment. Comedones are the primary lesions, the building blocks of acne. They consist of two types: whiteheads and blackheads.
Blackheads can also be called open comedones. It is not black because of dark dirt, clogged with black dirt, etc. It is dark in color because of the content is oxidized (exposed to oxygen).
They are often found on anywhere on every part of your body that have follicles.
It can be removed by a dermatologist or yourself by safety gentle squeezing. However, do be aware of the scarring side effects if not done properly. Extracting through an experienced dermatologist is much a safer option and they usually have tools used for safer extractions.
While a “blackheads” are open comedones, whiteheads are technically closed comedones. Whitehead is beneath the skin’s surface, and so without exposure to air and oxygen, the bump appears to be white or fleshed colored instead.
They are best removed through a dermatologist, as improper procedures done will lead to permanent scarring on the face.
So we have mentioned to you earlier about comedones and they are the building blocks of acne.
So how to do all these small assuming bumps that may be fun and interesting to squeeze develop into painful, red, embarrassing bumps that we recognized them as pimples and zits later?
The bacteria we called Propionibacterium acnes that normally live on our skin invade into the plugged pores, providing them the perfect environment for the bacteria to grow and thrive.
As the bacteria increase in number, this increase the pressure within the pore, the mix of oil, bacteria, and skin cells can cause a rupture to the comedone. This, in turn, leads to the red zit, the redness, the inflammation, the swelling and the pain in the area.
They officially became papules and pustules and are no longer comedones.
Papules and pustules are the inflammatory types of acne. Squeezing and picking on lesions like this can cause dark spots or even scarring.
You may be tempted to pick or squeeze it when it seems so ripe for the picking, but picking causes more problems than it is worth.
Papules are the flesh-colored to pink, red bumps that form when the weakened follicles burst open. These bumps can be very sensitive to the touch.
Moderate acne includes the accurately named pustules, which are deeper, reddish pimples filled with white or yellow pus. The surrounding skin can be rooted in inflammation and are also tender to the touch.
When acne papules are really deep, they often don’t produce a noticeable bump, but actually form a larger and only slightly raised but really painful lump under the skin. These bumps are known as cysts and nodules.
Cystic acne is the most severe form of acne. It is characterized by highly inflamed cysts and nodules.
Nodules are deep, large, painful swellings that are stiffer and harder to the touch because the inflammation is even deeper into the skin.
When this pimples grow, it is a 100% no picking zone on pimples like this. The increased inflammation associated with cysts and nodules poses a significant risk of permanent scarring.
The deeper the inflammation, the higher the risk of the inflammation. These are the reasons why dermatologists usually use the most aggressive medications to treat them than standard run-on the-mill topical and acne treatments.
